Super-Sub Rahan Ahmed Sends India into SAFF U-17 Semifinals with Narrow Win Over Bhutan

India secured a place in the semifinals of the SAFF Under-17 Championship 2025 after grinding out a 1-0 victory against a resilient Bhutan side at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo on Friday.

The win, India’s second in as many matches, takes them to six points in Group B and sets up a high-stakes clash against Pakistan on Monday to determine the group winner.

It was a much tighter affair compared to India’s goal-heavy opening match. Bhutan, known for their defensive discipline, made life difficult for the Blue Colts throughout the contest. For large spells, India dominated possession and dictated play but lacked the clinical edge in the final third.

India’s first real chance came in the 27th minute when Kamgouhao Doungel rose highest but saw his header drift narrowly wide. Captain Denny Singh Wangkhem had two promising opportunities before the break but couldn’t convert, as Bhutan’s compact backline stood firm and ensured the first half ended goalless.

The breakthrough came shortly after the interval through substitute Rahan Ahmed, who made an immediate impact after coming off the bench. In the 57th minute, Ahmed met a beautifully delivered curling cross from Maldino Singh Yumnam and guided a well-placed header past the Bhutanese keeper. His match-winning contribution earned him the Player of the Match award.

From there, India pushed forward with renewed energy. Dallalmuon Gangte nearly doubled the lead in the 82nd minute with a powerful effort that flew just wide. Moments later, Ahmed appeared to have grabbed a second goal, only for the referee to rule it out for a handball in the buildup.

Despite Bhutan’s late efforts to find an equalizer, India held their ground and managed the final minutes with composure. The backline remained alert, and the team registered its second consecutive clean sheet—another promising sign for head coach Ishfaq Ahmed’s young squad.

India now looks ahead to their final group stage match against traditional rivals Pakistan, a contest that promises intensity and will determine who tops Group B.

But for now, thanks to Rahan Ahmed’s heroics and a mature team effort, the Blue Colts are through to the last four, keeping their hopes of lifting the regional title very much alive.
