Subhasish Bose Stresses Unity Ahead of Crucial Asian Cup Qualifiers

    May 22, 2025

As India gears up for two vital fixtures in its AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign, senior defender and newly crowned AIFF Men’s Player of the Year Subhasish Bose has called for collective focus and unity within the squad to overcome recent setbacks and perform better on the international stage.

Speaking during the senior men’s national camp ahead of the June 10 clash against Hong Kong, Bose highlighted the importance of alignment within the team to execute the coach’s vision effectively. “If everyone plays with the same mentality and attitude, everyone can adapt and play the way our coach wants,” he said.

India’s last qualifier ended in frustration as the team was held to a goalless draw against Bangladesh on March 25. But Bose remains hopeful that the team can learn from that performance and move forward with confidence. “I don’t think every match is equal, and every player has ups and downs. But at the end, if we can work together and play as a team, then we can get a clean sheet and also a goal,” he said.

The return of captain Sunil Chhetri has further buoyed the team’s spirit. Bose believes that with India’s attacking talents, the goals will come. “I believe that we have a lot of talented strikers and midfielders who can provide us with goals. Sunil bhai has rejoined us, and I hope we can score goals in the next two matches,” he added.

Before the all-important qualifier, India will face Thailand in a friendly on June 4 — a match expected to serve as a testing ground for tactical adjustments and player combinations. Bose emphasized that head coach Manolo Marquez is actively working with players to rectify errors and shape their on-field decision-making. “The coach is discussing with us the mistakes we have made and is showing us what we should play and what we should not play. We are practising accordingly,” he noted.

After a stellar domestic season where he captained Mohun Bagan Super Giant to success, Bose is keen to carry that momentum into the national setup. “My club season has been good, and I have a strong belief that I am playing well. I hope I can retain my good form and play better for my country,” he said.

Looking ahead, the 28-year-old defender remains focused on the immediate challenge. “I am not willing to ponder on our past performances. Now, we have two international matches (Thailand and Hong Kong), and I want to give my best in these two matches so that I can get the best result for my country.”

With leadership, experience, and renewed energy in the squad, India will look to turn the tide and take a significant step toward Asian Cup qualification.
