Scotland’s Kenny McLean ruled out of Euro 2020 with Knee Injury

Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean has been ruled out of Scotland’s Euro 2020 campaign as he picked up a knee injury during the club’s last League game against Barnsley last weekend.

“Kenny McLean is set to be out of action for a period of 12 weeks following confirmation of a knee ligament injury,” the club said in a statement.

“McLean will now undergo further assessment with an orthopaedic consultant to ascertain a management and rehabilitation plan for the injury. The injury will rule McLean out of Scotland’s upcoming UEFA European Championship campaign.”

“Absolutely devastated to have picked up an injury that will mean I’ll miss the Euros,” McLean wrote on Twitter.

McLean and Norwich City had already secured a promotion to the Premier League and a second tier title before their 2-2 draw against Barnsley in the final league game. The timing of the injury is just unfortunate.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke is also feeling the void left by such an experienced midfielder and has wished him speedy recovery.

“I’m really disappointed for Kenny. He has been excellent this season for Norwich, playing an important role in winning the Championship and securing their return to the Premier League,” Clarke said in a statement released by the Scottish FA.

“His performances for the national team during my time in charge have always been to a good level and Kenny is a player I know I can rely on,” he added.

McLean powered Scotland to the Euros for the first time in 25 years with two crucial penalties against Israel and Serbia in the qualifying stages. The injury has now left him devastated.

“The composure he demonstrated to score two crucial penalties in the play-off matches sums up his temperament and I am confident that will play a big role in his recovery from this setback.

“Ultimately, his long-term fitness is the most important thing right now, but we all wish Kenny a full and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him get back playing as soon as possible.”

Scotland will open their Euro 2020 campaign on June 14 against Czech Republic in Glasgow. They will take on England next at the Wembley Stadium and then will return home to host Croatia.
