Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe believes manager Ruben Amorim needs at least three years to prove his mettle at the club. The Portuguese manager took the coaching reins from former coach Erik Ten Hag in November 2024.
But Amorim has had a difficult run as Manchester United’s boss as his team has failed to come up with consistent performances. Amorim has managed only 10 Premier League wins so far, and the pressure is building on him.
Amorim’s contract will expire in 2027 and Ratcliffe is ready to be patient with the Portuguese manager. Ratclife cited Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta’s example while backing Amorim.
“He has not had the best of seasons,” Ratcliffe told The Times’ “The Business” podcast.
“Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be, three years, because football is not overnight.
“Look at Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, he had a miserable time the first couple of years.”
The co-owner said the press sometimes wants instant results, but it is not possible in football.
“The press, sometimes I don’t understand,” Ratcliffe said.
“They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow.
“You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.”
Amorim has a win rate of 40% and he has failed to live up to the expectations. United recently registered a 2-0 win against Sunderland, which was a much-needed victory.
Manchester United will next take on defending champions Liverpool at Anfield on 19th October.
