Mohun Bagan Super Giant have strengthened their defensive unit ahead of the new season by signing India international Rahul Bheke on a one-year contract.
The experienced defender arrives with a strong reputation built over years of consistent performances. Comfortable both as a centre-back and a right-back, Bheke adds versatility and leadership to the squad. With more than 50 appearances for the Indian national team and experience of captaining the side, the 34-year-old is expected to bring valuable experience to the dressing room.
Bheke has been regarded as one of the Indian Super League’s most dependable defenders in recent seasons. Alongside his defensive qualities, he is also known for making an impact in attacking situations, particularly from set-pieces, where he has scored several important goals.
His move to Mohun Bagan marks a return to familiar surroundings in Kolkata. Having previously represented East Bengal, Bheke is well aware of the intense atmosphere surrounding the city’s football culture and the significance of the Kolkata Derby. His past experiences in the rivalry are among the memories he carries into this new chapter.
Speaking after completing the move, Bheke expressed his excitement about joining the club and outlined his ambitions for the coming season.
“It is every Indian footballer’s dream to play for Mohun Bagan. I am extremely proud and excited to join the best club in the country,” Bheke said. “Many of my national team teammates are already here, so settling in won’t be difficult. I want to contribute with my experience and help the team win trophies.”
The defender said the club’s ambition to compete for every available title was a major factor behind the move, adding that the goals of the team matched his own aspirations.
Bheke also reflected on a memorable moment from his earlier spell in Kolkata, when he scored the winning goal for East Bengal in a Derby against Mohun Bagan. Now wearing green and maroon, he hopes to create similar memories from the opposite side of the rivalry.
“I want to win and score in the Derby against East Bengal this time. That’s the promise I made to myself when I signed for Mohun Bagan,” he said.
With the new season approaching, Mohun Bagan’s latest signing brings proven quality, leadership and big-match experience. The club will hope Bheke’s arrival helps strengthen its defence as it prepares to challenge for silverware on multiple fronts.
