Paris Saint-Germain made history on Wednesday night by claiming their first UEFA Super Cup title, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy.
It was a night of contrasting emotions as Europa League champion Tottenham looked poised to lift the trophy in their first competitive outing under new head coach Thomas Frank. The Premier League side took control of the match with a commanding 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero shortly after halftime.
Tottenham’s organized performance seemed to have PSG on the ropes, but the French champions staged a spirited late comeback. Gonçalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembélé found the net late in the second half to level the score, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
PSG faced an early setback in the shootout when Vitinha missed the opening spot kick. However, newly signed goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier quickly turned the tide, denying Van de Ven’s effort and watching Mathys Tel miss the target. That opened the door for PSG’s shooters to capitalize.
Ramos, Dembélé, and Lee Kang-in each converted their penalties with confidence. In the decisive moment, Nuno Mendes stepped up and slotted home the winning penalty, sealing a memorable 4-3 shootout victory.
Though Spurs saw Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro all convert their penalties, it wasn’t enough to secure the club’s first Super Cup title.
The win not only adds another trophy to PSG’s growing cabinet but also marks a historic milestone: they become the first French club ever to lift the UEFA Super Cup. The triumph takes PSG’s 2025 trophy count to five.
It also offers a morale boost following last month’s narrow loss in the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea. For Enrique’s side, the victory serves as a strong statement ahead of the new Ligue 1 season, which begins Sunday with an away fixture against Nantes.
Tottenham, meanwhile, will look to bounce back quickly as they prepare to host Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday. Despite the loss, Thomas Frank’s debut showcased moments of promise for the North London club as they embark on a new era.
