Kerala Blasters FC have strengthened their defensive options ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season by securing the services of experienced English defender James Bolton on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old centre-back arrives with nearly 14 years of professional experience across English and Scottish football and is expected to play an important role in the Blasters’ revamped squad.
Bolton becomes the latest addition to Kerala Blasters’ busy transfer window, joining former Aston Villa winger Andre Green and Montenegro international Nebojša Kosović.
The club have also brought in several Indian players, including Amrinder Singh, Mohammed Sanan, Mohammed Yasir, Sahil Tavora, Ramhlunchhunga and Paul Ramfangzauva, as part of an extensive rebuilding process.
Ashley Westwood has reportedly played a crucial role in bringing Bolton to Kerala, with the club undergoing significant changes under the new Al Fursan era.
The English defender is expected to report to the team’s training camp in Chennai this week, where preparations are underway at Madraf FC’s facilities.
Born in Stone, England, Bolton began his football journey with Macclesfield’s youth setup before progressing to the senior team in 2012.
He subsequently gained valuable experience through spells with Workington AFC, Stafford, Halifax Town and Gateshead before moving to Shrewsbury Town and Portsmouth.
One of the highlights of his career came at Plymouth Argyle, where he was part of the squad that secured the League One title during the 2022-23 season.
Bolton later joined Scottish club St. Mirren before returning to England with Fleetwood Town, his most recent club.
Throughout his career, the versatile defender has recorded 413 appearances, including four outings for England C. He has also contributed 28 goals and 15 assists.
Although primarily recognised for his defensive abilities, Bolton has operated in multiple positions, including right-back, centre-back and right midfield.
His arrival could provide Kerala Blasters with much-needed experience and flexibility at the back as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
However, adapting quickly to Indian football and developing an understanding with his new teammates will be essential, particularly given the limited preseason preparation.
Kerala Blasters are scheduled to begin their ISL campaign away against Inter Kashi FC on October 11.
They will then face NorthEast United FC in Guwahati on October 18 before hosting their first home fixture on October 25.
The Blasters will conclude their October schedule with an away encounter against Chennai on October 31, as Bolton looks to make an immediate impact in his first footballing assignment outside Europe.
