India delivered a dominant performance to defeat Pakistan 3-0 in their SAFF Under-20 Championship encounter at the National Stadium in Malé on Thursday, confirming a place in the semifinals and knocking their rivals out of the competition.
The Blue Colts wasted no time asserting control, striking in just the third minute through Vishal Yadav. The young forward, already notable as one of the youngest debutants in the Indian Super League for Punjab FC, capitalised on an incisive attacking move. A lofted through ball from Gurnaj Singh split the Pakistani defence, allowing Yadav to bring the ball down calmly before slipping it past goalkeeper Kashif at the near post.
Pakistan attempted to respond and created multiple chances during the first half, but India’s defensive line remained resolute. Goalkeeper Suraj Aheibam played a crucial role, making a series of important saves to deny Pakistan any breakthrough and preserve India’s early lead heading into halftime.
Despite controlling possession for long stretches, India had to be patient before extending their advantage. The second goal arrived in the 64th minute, stemming from a well-orchestrated move. Ningthoukhongjam Rishi Singh redirected a crossfield delivery into the path of Omang Dodum, who timed his run perfectly and guided a composed header beyond the goalkeeper.
With momentum firmly on their side, India sealed the result late in the game. In the 84th minute, Prashan Jajo was brought down inside the penalty area, earning his team a spot-kick. Dodum stepped up and confidently fired the ball into the top corner, completing his brace and putting the result beyond doubt.
The convincing win not only highlighted India’s attacking sharpness and defensive discipline but also ensured their progression to the semifinals of the tournament. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s campaign came to an abrupt end following consecutive setbacks.
India will now turn its attention to the next challenge, as they prepare to face Bangladesh on March 28 with momentum firmly on their side.
