Gokulam Kerala FC produced a dramatic late escape from relegation on Tuesday after defeating Namdhari FC in a crucial Indian Football League 2025-26 clash.
Heading into the contest, both sides were locked in a tense battle near the bottom of the table, with survival in India’s second tier hanging in the balance. Gokulam entered the match knowing only a victory would guarantee safety and avoid the drop to I-League 2, the third tier of Indian men’s football.
For much of the game, Namdhari looked set to frustrate the two-time former I-League champion with a disciplined defensive display. However, heartbreak struck deep into stoppage time when Trijoy Savio Dias emerged as Gokulam’s unlikely hero.
The dramatic winner came after sustained late pressure from the Kerala side. Vitor Hugo Encarnação Freitas, better known as Barata, launched a long ball into the penalty area in one final attempt to break the deadlock.
Namdhari goalkeeper Niraj Kumar rushed off his line hoping to punch the danger away but failed to make solid contact with the ball. Gokulam centre-back Bouba Aminou, who had been pushed forward as an emergency striker in the closing stages, managed to get his head to the loose delivery and keep the attack alive.
With Namdhari unable to clear the danger inside a crowded box, Trijoy reacted quickest. The midfielder pounced on the loose ball and rifled his effort into the net, sparking wild celebrations among the Gokulam players and supporters.
The late strike proved decisive not just in the match but also in the relegation battle. The victory lifted Gokulam to 12 points, enough to move two clear of Namdhari and preserve its place in the Indian Football League for another season.
For Namdhari, the defeat marked a cruel end to a hard-fought campaign. After remaining defensively solid for almost the entire contest, a single lapse in concentration in stoppage time ultimately sealed its relegation to the third tier.
Gokulam, meanwhile, will now look to regroup after a turbulent season that saw one of India’s more decorated recent clubs pushed to the brink. Tuesday’s dramatic finish ensured the former champions avoided what would have been a major setback for the club’s future ambitions.
