Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. Makes Eredivisie History With Two Goals

    September 16, 2026

Ronald Koeman Jr. has inherited some of his father’s ability from the penalty spot, despite playing at the opposite end of the field.

The 31-year-old Telstar goalkeeper, son of Dutch legend Ronald Koeman, scored two penalties against Cambuur on Sunday, becoming the first goalkeeper in Eredivisie history to score twice in a single match. His unlikely brace rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw for Telstar at BUKO Stadion.

Making the accomplishment even more remarkable, Telstar had played with 10 men since the 22nd minute.

Koeman Jr. Leads Telstar Comeback From Two Goals Down

Telstar’s afternoon became considerably more difficult when Nökkvi Thórisson was sent off in the first half.

    Cambuur eventually capitalized after halftime.

Rafik El Arguioui put the visitors ahead in the 53rd minute, before Nicolas Binder doubled their advantage seven minutes later. Telstar were 2-0 down and playing with 10 men, but their goalkeeper was about to become their most important attacking player.

Telstar received a penalty in the 63rd minute, and instead of one of the team’s forwards or midfielders stepping forward, Koeman Jr. made his way from his own goal to the opposite penalty area.

He converted to cut Cambuur’s advantage to 2-1.

The goalkeeper was already Telstar’s designated penalty taker, so his decision to take responsibility was nothing unusual within the team. What followed, however, had never happened before in an Eredivisie match.

Deep into stoppage time, Telstar were awarded another penalty.

Once again, Koeman Jr. walked the length of the pitch to take it.

Cambuur goalkeeper Thijs Jansen and other opposition players attempted to distract him before the kick, but Koeman Jr. maintained his concentration and converted again in the 101st minute, completing Telstar’s comeback.

He celebrated by removing his shirt as his teammates surrounded him.

First Goalkeeper Ever to Score Twice in an Eredivisie Match

Koeman Jr.’s two penalties established a record that had stood throughout the history of the Dutch top flight.

Opta confirmed that he became the first goalkeeper ever to score two goals in one Eredivisie game.

Goalkeepers scoring in the Eredivisie is not unprecedented, but no goalkeeper had previously converted twice in the same match.

Former DOS and Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Nico van Zoghel holds the Eredivisie record for goals by a goalkeeper, having converted seven penalties between 1964 and 1967. Van Zoghel once attempted two penalties in the same match against Ajax, but scored the first and missed the second.

Koeman Jr. has now scored three Eredivisie goals across the last two seasons, all from the penalty spot.

His previous goal was considerably more important than an ordinary goalkeeper novelty.

In May, he converted an 89th-minute penalty against FC Volendam, scoring the winner that secured Telstar’s Eredivisie survival.

Penalty Taking Runs in the Koeman Family

There is an obvious family connection behind Koeman Jr.’s unusual role.

His father, Ronald Koeman, was one of football’s most prolific goalscoring defenders and became renowned for his ability from penalties and free kicks during a career that included Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and the Netherlands.

Ronald Koeman scored 254 career goals, including 115 penalties, an extraordinary total for a defender.

His son followed a completely different path.

Born in Barcelona while his father was playing for the Spanish club, Koeman Jr. developed as a goalkeeper. He played for Almere City and TOP Oss before joining Telstar in 2021, and was part of the team that earned promotion to the Eredivisie in 2025 after a 47-year absence from the Dutch top flight.

Koeman Jr. explained after Sunday’s match that taking penalties has become normal for both him and his teammates. He considers himself capable from the spot and has the confidence to accept the responsibility.

Against Cambuur, that confidence produced something no goalkeeper had accomplished before in the Eredivisie.

Telstar’s No. 1 faced two penalties.

    He scored both.

And instead of saving his team with his hands, Ronald Koeman Jr. rescued it with two goals.
