Enzo Fernández Impresses on Manchester City Debut Against Coventry

    September 16, 2026

Enzo Fernández was supposed to begin his Manchester City career on the bench. An injury during the warm-up changed those plans, and the £125 million midfielder responded with an impressive debut.

Fernández was promoted into the starting lineup after Nico O’Reilly suffered a back problem shortly before kickoff, helping Manchester City defeat Coventry City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Argentine played 76 minutes and was heavily involved in the move that produced Erling Haaland’s winning goal, offering an early look at how Enzo Maresca intends to use his deadline-day signing.

City’s victory also maintained its perfect start to the Premier League season, with Maresca’s team collecting nine points from its opening three matches.

Fernández Gets Unexpected Manchester City Start

Maresca had initially planned to introduce Fernández gradually.

The 25-year-old had only recently completed his £125 million transfer from Chelsea, a fee that equaled the British transfer record. He was named among City’s substitutes against Coventry because he had only been working with his new teammates for a matter of days.

    O’Reilly’s injury changed everything.

The England international experienced a back problem during the warm-up and returned to the dressing room, forcing Maresca to make a late adjustment. Fernández moved into the starting XI alongside fellow midfielder Elliot Anderson.

It was Fernández’s first start since the 2026 World Cup final and his first appearance for City following his deadline-day move.

He quickly became involved in City’s possession and buildup.

Fernández completed 66 of his 73 passes for a 90 percent completion rate, while creating one chance and making eight passes into the final third. He also completed five line-breaking passes, more than any of City’s attacking players.

Fernández Helps Create Haaland’s Winning Goal

His biggest contribution came in the 26th minute.

Fernández received possession on the right and played an incisive pass that released Antoine Semenyo behind Coventry’s defensive line. Semenyo immediately delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Haaland escaped his marker and powered a header past Carl Rushworth.

Semenyo received the assist, but Fernández’s pass was the action that opened Coventry and created the space for the cross.

The goal was Haaland’s 300th in club football and proved to be the only goal of the match.

Fernández nearly created another for the Norwegian during the second half.

In the 58th minute, he redirected the ball across goal for Haaland to finish, but the move was ruled out because Fernández had been offside.

He was also involved in another dangerous City attack when he supplied Rayan Cherki, whose effort struck the post.

Fernández finished his debut with two attempts, although neither was on target, and recorded expected figures of 0.13 xG and 0.12 xA. He was eventually replaced by Ayyoub Bouaddi in the 76th minute.

Maresca Pleased With Fernández’s First City Performance

Maresca had not expected Fernández to play such a significant role so soon after his arrival.

After the match, the City manager explained that Fernández had originally been placed on the bench because of how recently he had joined the club. The plan was simply to give him some minutes before O’Reilly’s injury forced the midfielder into the starting lineup.

Maresca was pleased with what he saw.

The previous relationship between the two should make Fernández’s adaptation easier. Maresca coached him at Chelsea during the 2024-25 season, meaning the midfielder already understands many of the tactical principles his manager is implementing at City.

Fernández was used alongside Anderson in City’s remodeled midfield following the summer departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

His ability to receive possession under pressure and find progressive passes was evident immediately, particularly in the buildup to Haaland’s goal.

    City Survives Late Coventry Pressure

Fernández’s encouraging debut came during a match that was considerably more difficult for City than the possession numbers suggested.

Coventry threatened early when an Abdukodir Khusanov backpass almost crossed City’s own goal line before Gianluigi Donnarumma recovered. Taiwo Awoniyi then went through on goal following a Semenyo mistake but sent his attempt narrowly wide.

City responded through Haaland and Cherki before finally taking the lead through Haaland’s header.

The hosts failed to find the second goal, allowing Frank Lampard’s Coventry to remain dangerous.

Donnarumma made important saves from Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms, including a point-blank stop late in the match that preserved City’s advantage.

City held on for its third consecutive Premier League victory under Maresca.

For Fernández, the circumstances made his debut even more notable.

Four days after completing his £125 million transfer, he went from expecting a place on the bench to starting at the Etihad with only minutes of warning.

Seventy-six minutes later, Fernández had completed 90 percent of his passes and played the pass that unlocked Coventry for the decisive goal in his first Manchester City appearance.
