Former England midfielder Danny Murphy believes Thomas Tuchel should be sacked after the team’s third-place finish. The Three Lions ended the quadrennial tournament in third place after a 6-4 win against France at the Miami Stadium on Saturday. This is England’s best finish since they won the mega event back in 1966.

Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick whereas Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa and Jude Bellingham also found the back of the net for England.

Meanwhile, Tuchel’s tactics were questioned after England suffered a 2-1 loss in the World Cup semifinal against defending champions Argentina. Murphy said Tuchel was not up to the mark in his defensive tactics against Argentina.

“[Tuchel] will keep his job, but I don’t think he should,” Murphy told BBC Sport. “He has failed. They are missing out on a World Cup final because of the tactics. They will be devastated.

“[There are] so many incredibly, wonderfully gifted footballers in our squad and that was why it was so disappointing in that second half against Argentina, because most of them weren’t on the pitch.

“The frustrating thing is this level of forward thinking and creativity [in the win over France] just wasn’t there against Argentina.”

On the other hand, former England defender Stephen Warnock also questioned Tuchel’s decision to retreat against Argentina after midfielder Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute.

“We all thought Thomas Tuchel was going to be the guy who took the handbrake off,” Stephen Warnock told BBC Sport. “Just disappointed that we retreated so quickly in that game.

“I think, where was the pace against Argentina? The performance [against France] from Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford and their ability to stretch the pitch … Pace kills anyone.

“It’s a defender’s worst nightmare and it is so hard to defend against.”

Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez were able to find the back of the net for Argentina to help them book their final berth.
