What comes after Bazball? England enter a defining new era under Joe Root

    August 19, 2026

The Bazball era is officially over. With Ben Stokes retiring from Test cricket and Brendon McCullum losing his job as head coach, England now find themselves at the start of a significant transition. The philosophy that transformed their Test fortunes for two exhilarating years has come to an end, and the focus now shifts to what comes next.

Joe Root has returned as England’s Test captain following Stokes’ retirement, while Marcus Trescothick will oversee the upcoming Test series against Pakistan as interim coach. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is set to take charge in October, making the next few months a fascinating period for English cricket.

Root has already indicated that he does not intend to “completely rip everything up” from the Bazball era. That statement suggests England will not abandon the aggressive mindset that McCullum and Stokes introduced. However, balancing that philosophy with greater consistency and pragmatism will be one of Root’s biggest challenges.

His second stint as England Test captain has begun with a symbolic change: the team curfew is gone. Root has chosen to remove the restriction brought in after the 4-1 Ashes humiliation, but there are already doubts over whether he can match Stokes’ ability to read situations and inspire his team from the captain’s chair. Root has considerable experience, having led England a record 65 times, with his most recent assignment coming in the second Test against New Zealand earlier this summer.

Experience, though, will count for little unless Root can halt England’s alarming slide. They have lost eight of their last 13 Tests, and the 2-1 defeat by New Zealand marked the end of the ‘Bazball’ era. With Stokes now retired from international cricket, Root has inherited an England side in transition and a huge responsibility to rebuild it.

His return to the captaincy also raises inevitable questions. Root previously led England in a record 65 Tests between 2017 and 2022 but stepped down after a disappointing run in which England managed just one victory in their final 17 matches under his leadership, including a 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia. At the time, Root admitted that the pressures of captaincy had begun to have “an unhealthy effect” on his personal life.

There is also the immediate challenge of results. In his first match back as stand-in captain following Stokes’ retirement, England suffered a crushing 253-run defeat to New Zealand in the deciding Test, offering a reminder that changing personnel alone does not guarantee success.

The Pakistan series will provide the first real indication of how Root intends to shape this team before Fleming officially assumes charge. Will England retain the fearless intent that defined Bazball, or will they evolve into a more measured and adaptable Test side?

The answers may not come immediately, but one thing is certain: English cricket has entered another defining chapter, and the months ahead promise to be among the most intriguing in recent Test history.
