Chepauk Super Gillies captain Kaushik Gandhi admitted that the rub of the green didn’t go their way after they lost the Super Over contest against Nellai Royal Kings in the opening match of the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League 2022 at the Indian Cement Company Ground, Tirunelveli on Thursday.
Nellai Royal Kings posted a par score of 184 runs in their 20 overs after CSG skipper Baba Indrajith won the toss and decided to bowl first.
Five runs were needed off the final ball for CSG and S Harish Kumar scored a boundary to take the game into the Super Over. Thus, it was a thrilling start to the tournament.
CSG scored nine runs in the Super Over while batting first but NRK was able to chase it down after Sanjay Yadav scored a boundary on the second ball of the over against Sandeep Warrier.
Gandhi believes his team needs to work on some areas ahead of their second game and come up with a more collective effort in the upcoming matches.
He said in the post-match presentation after the loss, “It was up and down, we as players enjoyed the game. The rub of the green did not go our way. Overall no regrets. It’s not something we want to do obviously [on starting every year on the losing note]. Don’t know whether to call it a good omen, the tournament runs fast, it’s important to get momentum and we need to work on our areas for the next game which comes quickly. To start with I was happy at how I played but it does not count for anything as we did not win. I respect whatever they did, it definitely won’t happen under my leadership. There is no point complaing or cribbing about it, it’s what it is. We have to stay inside the ground from the next game.”
There is no doubt that Chepauk Super Gillies will be a tad disappointed as they had the opposition at 27-3 after 5.2 overs but they were able to post a par score of 184 runs despite a scratchy start.
On the other hand, Kaushik Gandhi scored a fine knock of 64 runs but N Jadadeesan and Sonu Yadav could not convert their starts into big scores despite scoring 25 and 34 respectively.
CSG will next face Madurai Panthers on Saturday at the same venue.
