Mumbai Indians roared back to form with a dominant 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans, thanks to a sensational maiden Indian Premier League century from Tilak Varma at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday.
Coming into the match under pressure after a run of low scores, Tilak delivered when it mattered most. Starting cautiously, he unleashed an extraordinary assault in the latter stages of the innings, finishing unbeaten on 101 off just 45 balls. His knock, studded with eight fours and seven sixes, turned the game decisively in Mumbai’s favour.
The left-hander’s late surge was breathtaking. In the final six overs, he smashed 82 runs off only 23 deliveries, leading Mumbai to plunder 96 runs in that period and post a daunting 199 for five. He took apart bowlers with precision, notably hammering Ashok Sharma for 26 runs in a single over and dominating Prasidh Krishna with calculated aggression.
Tilak brought up his century in dramatic fashion, finding the boundary off the final ball of the innings. His emotional celebration reflected both relief and redemption, as the milestone also matched the joint-fastest hundred in Mumbai Indians history, alongside Sanath Jayasuriya.
Mumbai’s innings had not begun smoothly. Early wickets, including Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav, left them reeling at 45 for three in the Powerplay, with Kagiso Rabada bowling at high pace. However, a steady 45 from Naman Dhir and his partnership with Tilak rebuilt the innings, while skipper Hardik Pandya added stability in a crucial stand.
In reply, Gujarat Titans collapsed under pressure. Jasprit Bumrah struck with the very first ball, dismissing Sai Sudharsan, setting the tone for a one-sided chase. Key batters Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill fell cheaply, and the innings never recovered.
Mumbai’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Mitchell Santner picked up important wickets, while Impact substitute Ashwani Kumar starred with four scalps. Gujarat Titans were eventually bowled out for just 100.
The emphatic win ends Mumbai Indians’ four-match losing streak and provides a timely boost, while Gujarat Titans are left searching for answers after another fragile batting display.
