Suryakumar Yadav Undergoes Successful Sports Hernia Surgery, Eyes Return for Bangladesh Tour

    June 26, 2025

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has successfully undergone surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen in Munich, Germany, and is now on the road to recovery. The 34-year-old batter confirmed the news via his social media on Wednesday, expressing optimism about his comeback.

“Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” Suryakumar wrote.

This marks the third surgery for the seasoned cricketer in as many years. He previously underwent ankle surgery in 2023 and had a similar hernia operation earlier in 2024, indicating a challenging period in his otherwise flourishing career.

Despite the medical setbacks, Suryakumar had a remarkable run in the IPL 2025 season for Mumbai Indians, scoring 717 runs to finish second only to Sai Sudharsan in the race for the Orange Cap. His explosive form earned him the Player-of-the-Tournament award, and he played a pivotal role in leading his team to the Playoffs. However, Mumbai Indians’ campaign ended in Qualifier 2, where they were defeated by the Punjab Kings.

Following the IPL, Suryakumar continued to stay active in the domestic circuit, captaining Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the T20 Mumbai League. Though his returns were modest—122 runs in five innings—his leadership and commitment to the game remained evident.

Suryakumar is expected to begin his rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in about two weeks. With India’s next white-ball assignment—a six-match tour of Bangladesh in August—on the horizon, fans and team management will be closely monitoring his recovery. He is likely to return to lead the T20I squad in the opening match on August 26 in Chattogram.

Although he has not featured in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final, Suryakumar’s recent performances in T20 formats keep him in strong contention for leadership and batting duties. His resilience through injuries, combined with his current form, makes his anticipated return a significant boost for India’s white-ball ambitions.
