India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill scored a magnum opus knock of 269 runs in the first innings of the second Test match against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Thursday. Gill broke multiple records during his marathon knock of 387 balls, in which he struck 30 fours and three sixes.
The flamboyant batter broke Virat Kohli’s record of best Test score by an Indian captain. Kohli’s best score in the red-ball version was 254 runs, which had come against South Africa at Pune in 2019.
Furthermore, Gill entered the record books by becoming the first Indian Test captain to score a double century in England as well as SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. Moreover, the 25-year-old is the third Indian after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to score a double century in Tests in England.
Gill’s 269 is also the highest score by any Indian batter in English conditions as he went past Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 221 runs, which the Little Master had scored at the Oval in 1979.
Gill also became the first Indian captain to score a double century on English soil. The previous best was Mohammad Azharuddin’s 179 at Manchester in 1990.
Gill, at 25 years and 298 days, also became the second youngest Indian captain to score a double century after MAK Pataudi, who scored a double ton when he was 23 years and 39 days old.
Moreover, Gill became the sixth Indian captain after MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to score 200 runs in an innings.
Furthermore, Gill became the third player in the world after Chris Gayle and Rohit Sharma to score a double century in Tests, a double century in ODIs, and a century in T20I cricket.
