Shubman Gill backs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of ODI series against Australia

Indian captain Shubman Gill has backed the veteran duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to continue their consistent performances in the three-match ODI series against Australia. Kohli and Rohit have all the experience under their belt and they would return to action after last playing in the IPL.

While Rohit has amassed 11,168 runs in 273 ODI matches at an impressive average of 48.77, Kohli has aggregated 14,181 runs in 302 ODI games at a stunning average of 57.88; thus, their records speak for themselves.

Shubman Gill said on JioHotstar, “(On RoKo) – Expectations, I mean… They are someone who’s won many matches for us in the past, and they’ve been playing for India in the past 10-15 years, and winning matches for us. The experience they bring to the table is something every captain or every team wants, and that’s what we’re looking forward to. We just want them to go out there and do their thing, do their magic.”

Gill said India has been in tremendous form in ODIs and he is looking forward to playing in Australia.

“(On IND vs AUS series) – I think we’ve been playing one of the best ODI cricket in the past 2-3 years, and nothing changes for us. I think it’s more or less the same team that we are playing. So, very excited to go out there and play in Australia,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gill played in the Asia Cup (T20Is) before the two-match Test series against the West Indies. He will now lead India in the ODI series and added that he will go back to the basics of the 50-over version in Australia.

Gill concluded, “(On captaincy) From Asia Cup to here, it was a very good turnaround. Especially, it’s the first time we finished the Asia Cup, and in two or three days, we were playing a Test match that was new for me. But I think going back to the basics of a particular format, there’s something that I think works for me, and whenever you’re switching formats, like what are the base of that format, is something that I go back to, and I think that works for me.”

The first ODI between India and Australia will be played at Perth on Sunday.
