Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra said reserving Gurnoor Brar only for Test cricket is a good idea. However, he questioned whether this approach would be right.
Chopra highlighted that Test cricket is played sporadically and it is not easy to achieve the right momentum from the get-go. India recently played a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which they won by 1-0. However, Brar didn’t feature in any of the Test matches despite being part of the squad. India’s next Test series is against New Zealand, which will be played in November.
The lanky pacer has impressed in his young career and made a roaring start against Afghanistan.
“It’s a good thought, but is it the right thought? That question will definitely be there because Test cricket happens very sporadically. A series ended just now in August, and then you will see a Test series in November. After that, you will get to see the next Test series in January end,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
Chopra noted that fast bowler from Punjab could be a handy bowler in South African conditions in the 2027 ODI World Cup as he can get extra bounce because of his height.
“It happens so sporadically that you say whether you will play him this only. How would it work out if you are going to play him this only? It’s also on your mind that the ODI World Cup is approaching. We might need pace and bounce in the ODI World Cup in South Africa. Gurnoor Brar is a bowler who has just started,” he observed.
The former Delhi cricketer added that Brar should be given consistent opportunities across all formats.
“If someone has just started, you also want to give him a lot of opportunities, that he should play ODIs and T20Is as well, in different conditions and situations, because you don’t know how he would perform and respond. These are little, little tests you want to keep taking consistently, just to know that by the time the World Cup comes, our man is ready,” Chopra elaborated.
Brar is currently leading Bathinda Royals in the ongoing Sher-E-Punjab T20 league.
