Senior allrounder Ravindra Jadeja will make his return to the Indian team for next month’s two-Test series in Sri Lanka after recovering from the tennis elbow injury sustained during the IPL. However, the pair of Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana were not picked due to injuries, while the recuperating allrounder Nitish Reddy was not available for selection.
Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the final ODI against England after suffering an impact injury to his left knee in Cardiff, has been named in the squad but his participation – as well as that of B Sai Sudharsan – will be subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. Nitish Kumar Reddy was another not to be named for the tour, after missing the Ireland and England tours with a quadriceps injury.
The BCCI said that Washington is ruled out of the first Test in Sri Lanka. His unavailability significantly influenced the composition of India’s spin attack, with off-spinning allrounder Saransh Jain being handed his maiden call-up. Jain, 33, strengthened his credentials after an outstanding performance for India A in Galle recently, where he claimed six wickets across the match and scored an unbeaten 70. With Sri Lanka expected to field several left-handers, the presence of Jain is not surprising.
The left-arm spinner Manav Suthar has kept his place after an impressive Test debut against Afghanistan in June, but spin-bowling allrounder Harsh Dubey has lost out to Jain.
Washington missed the third ODI against England with a hamstring problem and was replaced by Dubey, while Rana suffered a hamstring injury midway through the T20I series in England after making his comeback from the knee injury that ruled him out of both IPL 2026 and the T20 World Cup.
Gurnoor Brar – who enhanced his chances of retention after a 10-wicket match haul for India A against Sri Lanka A – has kept his place in the squad as one of four pacers alongside Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
The rest of the squad is along familiar lines. KL Rahul will partner Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order, with captain Shubman Gill continuing at No. 4. Sai Sudharsan is likely to retain his place after impressing for India A, while Devdutt Padikkal remains in contention. Rishabh Pant remains India’s first-choice wicketkeeper, with Dhruv Jurel serving as his deputy. Kuldeep Yadav leads the spin department
The series begins in Galle on August 15 before moving to Colombo for the second Test on August 23. It will mark India’s first assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle following last year’s 2-0 home defeat to South Africa.
