Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the notion that IPL 2027 would be the last season for Rohit Sharma. The former Mumbai Indians captain is performing consistently despite doubts raised on his future.
Ashwin highlighted that the same reports have been circulated regarding MS Dhoni’s future.
Meanwhile, Rohit scored 283 runs in nine matches of IPL 2026 at an average of 35.37 and a strike rate of 157.22.
Ashwin said on his YouTube Channel, “We don’t know if he’s (Rohit) going to play only one more year or longer. The same has been said about Dhoni, and he has ended up playing for many years and will likely return as a player again next season. In the future, I won’t rule out Naman Dhir also as a captaincy option in the future, looking at his clarity and unflappability.”
Rohit has all the experience under his belt and he would look to keep delivering the goods for Mumbai Indians. There are reports that suggest Rohit can also take over as MI captain.
On the other hand, Ashwin highlighted it is almost certain that Mumbai Indians will part ways with Hardik Pandya.
“It’s almost certain that he (Hardik) won’t be with MI unless they try to retain him at the last moment. But I do believe he’ll be traded. MI might look for a leg-spinner in the trade, and there were even talks of MI targeting an Indian left-arm pacer from PBKS for Hardik,” said Ashwin (via the aforementioned source).
Under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, Mumbai Indians have managed to qualify for the playoffs on a solitary occasion in the last three editions of the IPL.
