Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has showered praise on West Indies’ spinner Akeal Hosein for his impressive performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. The left-arm orthodox spinner returned with splendid figures of 4-28 in his quota of four overs against Zimbabwe in the Super 8 clash of the tournament at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday.
Hosein accounted for Brian Bennett, Ryan Burl, and Blessing Muzarabani in his fine spell. Thus, he played an instrumental role in skittling out Zimbabwe at 147 after the West Indies posted an above-par score of 254 runs on the board. The Windies registered a comprehensive win of 107 runs and they would look to continue the good show.
Hosein has scalped six wickets in five matches of the T20 World Cup at an average of 23.50.
Ashwin wrote on X, “Akeal Hosein has been a power play bank. He is a real asset for any team.”
On the other hand, Hosein was roped in for INR 2 crore in IPL 2026 auction by Chennai Super Kings. The left-arm spinner is hopeful that he delivers the goods for his team as an all-rounder.
Hosein said on ESPN Cricinfo, “The chat was more along the lines of how he deals with international cricket. He shared his experiences and told me a couple of things I need to do to put myself in positions from where I can do well with bat and ball. It’s definitely information I took in, and I’m going to go about it as he said. Hopefully, one day, I become an all-rounder for my team.”
West Indies will next take on South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday.
