Punjab Kings continued their dominant run in IPL 2026 with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, thanks to a scintillating unbeaten knock from Prabhsimran Singh.
Chasing a challenging target of 196, Punjab rode on Prabhsimran’s explosive 80 off just 39 balls, as he stitched a match-winning 139-run partnership with skipper Shreyas Iyer, who contributed a composed 66 off 35 deliveries. The duo’s calculated yet aggressive approach ensured the visitors crossed the finish line comfortably, silencing a packed home crowd.
Mumbai had earlier posted 195 for 6, recovering strongly after a shaky start. Arshdeep Singh struck early for Punjab, dismissing Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav off consecutive deliveries, a milestone moment as he became the first Punjab Kings bowler to reach 100 IPL wickets.
Under pressure at 12 for 2, Mumbai found stability through Quinton de Kock and Naman Dhir. De Kock, stepping in for the injured Rohit Sharma, led the charge with a magnificent unbeaten 112 off 60 balls. Dhir complemented him well, capitalising on a dropped chance to score a half-century, with the pair adding 122 runs for the third wicket to rebuild the innings.
Despite the strong finish, Mumbai’s total proved inadequate on a batting-friendly surface.
Punjab’s chase began at a blistering pace, racing to 21 in the opening over. However, Allah Ghazanfar briefly swung momentum back by removing Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly in quick succession.
That was as good as it got for the hosts.
Prabhsimran quickly took control of the innings, playing with freedom and confidence. Mixing powerful stroke play with smart strike rotation, he kept the required rate in check throughout. At the other end, Iyer anchored the innings perfectly, accelerating when needed and maintaining composure under pressure.
As their partnership flourished, Mumbai’s bowling attack struggled to find answers. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah endured another wicketless outing, compounding the team’s growing concerns during a losing streak.
The clinical chase highlighted Punjab’s balance and depth, reinforcing their status as one of the most consistent sides this season. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s campaign continues to falter, with this marking their fourth consecutive defeat after an opening win.
With momentum firmly on their side, Punjab Kings look increasingly like serious title contenders, while Mumbai Indians are left searching for solutions to halt their slide.
