Michael Vaughan says Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight after Lord’s loss

Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight at Lord’s as he had done right through the first two Test matches after India’s 22-run loss in the third Test on Monday. Gill amassed 585 runs in the first two matches of the series at an incredible average of 146.25 but could not carry his rich form at the Mecca of Cricket.

The Indian captain returned with scores of 16 and 6 in the third Test match as he could not deliver with the bat. Gill was beaten on four occasions during his nine-ball stay in the second innings and looked tentative at the crease. Eventually, he was plumbed in front of the wickets by Brydon Carse, who got the ball to move back into the right-hander.

Michael Vaughan wrote in his column for the Telegraph, “Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight or calm as usual when he came out to bat on the fourth evening, but his team fought so hard on Monday in a fabulous Test.”

Meanwhile, Vaughan noted that India are trailing 1-2 in the series despite winning more sessions than England. The former English skipper hailed the home team for winning the two Test matches in which they had their backs against the wall.

Vaughan added, “This is shaping up to be an unforgettable series, because the teams are evenly matched and there is rancour in the air. India are 2-1 down, but you’d have to say they’ve won more sessions than England. But Stokes and England’s spirit means they have won two matches they could have been well-beaten in.”

India could not win the crucial moments at Lord’s and thus they are trailing by 1-2 in the series.

The fourth Test match between England and India will be played at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, from July 23 onwards.
