Michael Vaughan hails Shubman Gill after double century, says he will average 45 by end of series

    July 4, 2025

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has showered praise on Shubman Gill after the Indian skipper scored a masterpiece knock of 269 runs against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Thursday. Gill smashed 30 fours and three sixes in his marathon knock as he batted at the top of his game.

The right-hander broke multiple records during his incredible knock, including becoming the highest scorer as Indian captain in Test cricket.

Gill has the most runs (424)in just three innings in the ongoing series and his career average has gone past 40 (40.65). The 25-year-old was averaging 35 before the Test series against England.

Vaughan predicted that Gill would have a career average of 45 at the end of the series against England.

“At the start of the series, I said that his average of 35 in cricket, that’s not high enough for his quality. I said by the end of his career he’ll be averaging 45. I think probably by the end of this series he will be averaging 45. He’s made a terrific start. He is the captain, second time out and he’s now two from two. Magnificent,” said Vaughan.

The former right-handed England batter hailed Gill’s technique and his hunger to perform. Gill was able to make the most of the batting friendly conditions and deserves all the credit.

“It was a great toss for him to have lost, but I think as Sunny said, when you get really quality players, when they get on a good surface, and they know there’s not a great deal of swing or seam, there’s the odd ball that bounces. There’s not a great deal of spin just yet. I think great players realise it, and his feet have been going great. His technique looks absolutely pure. And he just had the mindset to perform,” said Vaughan.

After Gill’s double century, India posted a mammoth score of 587 runs on the board. At stumps on day two, England were struggling at 77-3.
