Sunrisers Hyderabad began with fireworks but ended in frustration as Kolkata Knight Riders scripted a remarkable turnaround to secure a seven-wicket victory in their IPL clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday.
The match opened in breathtaking fashion, with SRH unleashing an aggressive assault that left KKR reeling. The home side raced past the 100-run mark in just 8.5 overs, threatening to take the game away almost instantly. Leading the charge was Travis Head, who dazzled with a blistering knock. His array of boundaries in the opening over set the tone, and he powered his way to a rapid half-century in just 22 balls.
However, the tide turned abruptly. The introduction of spin proved decisive as Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine tightened their grip on the game. Head’s dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse, with wickets falling in quick succession. What had looked like a certain 200-plus total soon unraveled under relentless pressure.
A key moment came when Rovman Powell pulled off a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Heinrich Klaasen, shifting momentum firmly in KKR’s favour. Narine also reached a significant milestone, becoming the first overseas bowler to claim 200 wickets in the IPL.
SRH eventually limped to 165, a total that seemed well below par given their explosive start. Attempting to defend the score, skipper Pat Cummins experimented early, even turning to off-spin, but the move failed to produce the desired breakthrough.
KKR’s chase was initially aggressive, with Finn Allen launching a quick counterattack before falling after a brisk cameo. The foundation, however, was laid by Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who combined for a composed 84-run partnership. Raghuvanshi brought up a fluent half-century, steering the innings with maturity.
Though SRH attempted to claw back with pace changes and substitutions, the target never seemed out of KKR’s reach. Rinku Singh eventually sealed the win with ease, finishing the game with 10 balls to spare.
