Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan reckons it will be a unique thing if Jasprit Bumrah becomes the Indian captain in the future.
Bumrah had recently said that it will be his honor if he would be given the captaincy onus and he would be ready to take it.
Bumrah hasn’t yet led in the Indian Premier League or the domestic circuit and it will be interesting to note how he will handle things if he is given captaincy duties in the future. The gun fast bowler is one of India’s premier fast bowlers and can definitely deliver the goods as a leader.
Furthermore, Rohit Sharma, who is leading India in all three formats, had recently named Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah as possible three leaders for the future.
Meanwhile, India hasn’t been led by a fast bowler in the past except for Kapil Dev. The last bowler to lead India was Anil Kumble.
It has been a norm in International cricket that batters are generally given leadership duties. However, Cricket Australia recently appointed Pat Cummins as their Test captain and he led the team to a 4-0 win against England in the Ashes.
Irfan Pathan said on Star Sports, “We have not seen too many Indian bowlers doing the captaincy. You can talk about Kapil Dev, he was an all-rounder and after that, Anil Kumble had become a captain as a bowler. So, it will be a unique thing if Jasprit Bumrah becomes the Indian captain in the future.”
Pathan added that Bumrah will be a part of the leadership group even if he isn’t going to lead.
“There is workload management done. We have seen that he [Bumrah] does not play too much Test match cricket in India. But he has the ability, when you become a senior player, you get the experience. He will definitely be part of the leadership even if he doesn’t get to captain.”
The renowned analyst added that Jasprit Bumrah’s journey has been amazing. Bumrah has taken giant strides as a bowler since making his debut and he has always shown an upward swing in his improvement graph.
“Jasprit Bumrah’s journey has been outstanding. There was a time when he was playing regular first-class cricket, he was performing well as well. He got rewarded when he got a chance in the IPL and then he started representing the Indian team, he has not looked back.”
