Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has showered praise on Shubman Gill for his consistent performances. Gill has impressed in his young career and he has ticked the right boxes. The 23-year-old recently became the youngest to score a double century in the ODI format when he smashed 208 against New Zealand in the first ODI.
Furthermore, Gill became the fastest Indian batter to reach 1000 runs in the 50-overs version, bettering the previous records of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.
The youngster has grabbed his opportunity at the top of the order and he has been performing consistently. Gill continued his good form as he scored an unbeaten knock of 40 runs in the second ODI against the Kiwis.
Irfan Pathan said on Star Sports, “Shubman Gill – it was very good to see the commitment after having scored a double hundred. Youngsters try to show overaggression at times, go too far ahead and make mistakes, but he didn’t go towards any such flamboyance.”
“He played normal cricket. We got to see crisp shots on the up and he tried to bat with full commitment. It was a very good thing that he forgot the double hundred.”
On the other hand, former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar lauded Gill for staying in the moment after scoring a double century.
Bangar said, “You want to remain in that zone. You might call it a trance or ideal performance state where you are neither thinking about the past nor the future. You are trying to stay in the present.”
“It is an art. We talk a lot about technique and temperament but to stay in the present, keep all thoughts in your mind at bay and focus on the ball and play according to the tempo is an ability. He has attained that so early in his career, so these are great signs for his career going forward.”
Shubman Gill has amassed 1142 runs in 20 ODI matches at an impressive average of 71.38 and a strike rate of 107.33. The third and final ODI between India and New Zealand will be played on Tuesday.
