Legendary Sunil Gavaskar hailed Yashasvi Jaiswal for scoring a double century in the first innings of the second Test match against England at Vizag. Gavaskar reckons Jaiswal is a quick learner as he converted his start into a big score, which he failed to do in the opening Test.
The left-hander scored 80 runs in the first innings at Hyderabad but could not get a big score despite being settled at the crease. However, Jaiswal played a gargantuan knock of 209 runs in the second Test and helped India post 396 runs on the board in the first innings after they elected to bat first.
In fact, none of the other batters could even go past the 35-run mark in the first innings and thus Jaiswal’s knock was of paramount importance for the hosts.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal showed he is a quick learner by making sure he didn’t miss out on a hundred as he did in the first Test match by scoring a magnificent double century in the second Test,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.
“India certainly needed someone to hold the innings together with a big century as once again most of the other batters got going like they did in the first Test and then gifted their wickets away,” he added.
Jaiswal has definitely impressed with his fearless game and likes to take the bull by its horns. The southpaw scored 19 fours and seven sixes in his blistering knock as he batted at his absolute best.
Courtesy Jaiswal’s fine knock, India went on to register a convincing win of 106 runs to level the five-match series by 1-1. Jasprit Bumrah bagged a total of nine wickets in the second Test whereas Shubman Gill also got back into form, scoring a brilliant knock of 104 runs in the second essay.
The third Test match between India and England will be played at Rajkot from 15th February onwards.
