ICC Women World Cup 2022: Just so relieved to contribute – Marizanne Kapp

South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp was delighted after contributing to the team’s third win of the ongoing ICC Women World Cup 2022.

South Africa won by three wickets against England Women in the 13th match of the tournament at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Monday.

Kapp bowled a superb spell for South Africa as she returned with bowling figures of 5-45 in her quota of 10 overs. She accounted for Danielle Wyatt, Sophie Dunkley, Heather Knight, Kate Cross, and Katherine Brunt. Thus, she played a key role in keeping the opposition at 235-9 in the 50 overs.

On the other hand, Kapp also played a key role in the run-chase as she scored 32 runs from 42 balls to help her team get close to the target. Ergo, she was awarded the Player of the match. Furthermore, Laura Wolvaardt scored 77 runs for South Africa.

Marizanne Kapp said in the post-match presentation, “Just so relieved to contribute. This was a big game for us, we knew we had to rock up today and I am so glad we did. I just backed myself, I remember what they did to us in the semifinal of the previous World Cup and I knew I had to have better plans this time around. Been working on a few things and luckily today it came off. That’s what has been brilliant tonight, we still haven’t played our best cricket, especially with the bat and we managed to scrape the runs and walk away with the win. We miss her (Dane van Niekerk) a lot, so much harder without her, this is probably for her.”

Meanwhile, South African captain Sune Luus also heaped praise on Marizanne Kapp for her contribution with both bat and the ball.

Lulus said after the game, “We do our best when we put the opposition under pressure (bowling first). Happy that it worked out tonight. Oh, world-class (Kapp). She’s an inspiration for young girls and boys out there. Lizelle hasn’t played much cricket in the past few months. Don’t want to put pressure on her. Glad everyone chipped in. Regardless of what happens in this tournament, we’ve made history today. Nothing can change that.”

South Africa has now won all of their three matches in the ongoing marquee event and they would want to continue their good form. The Proteas will next face New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Thursday.
