Dawid Malan says Gujarat Titans captaincy has helped Shubman Gill in leading India

    July 9, 2025

England batter Dawid Malan believes leading Gujarat Titans in a high-pressure league like the Indian Premier League has helped Shubman Gill in leading India in Test cricket. While Gill could not lead GT to playoffs in IPL 2024, the franchise made it to the last four teams of the tournament with their captain leading from the front in IPL 2025, scoring 650 runs.

Gill has carried the same form and confidence while leading India in the red-ball version. In the first two Test matches of the series against England, Gill has amassed 585 runs at an incredible average of 146.25.

Gill aggregated 430 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston and played a key role in India’s historic win of 336 runs.

“To captain an IPL team. He’s taken over and to be able to captain, to deal with pressure of franchise cricket, with owners who have opinions on teams, your own performances. They spend a lot of money on the team and want the team to be performing. That will help him captaining India. Someone like Shubman Gill, having that experience and to deal with pressure, expectations, and big names, that would put him in a really good space to captain India,” Malan said on Beard before Wicket podcast.

On the other hand, England spinner Adil Rashid said Gill has got all the potential and compared Gill’s numbers with former Indian captain Virat Kohli.

“He’s got the potential already. I’ve seen a stat, he’s 25 but he’s on par with Kohli already, when he was 25, in terms of centuries. Growing up in India, he’s got to be used to that pressure in the IPL and playing in India. He’s got that already in him. I think he’ll thrive under that pressure and it shows,” Rashid said in the same podcast.

The third Test match between India and England will be played at Lord’s, London from 10th July onwards.
