Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as its new head coach ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Zaheer will succeed Stephen Fleming, who stepped down from the position in July, bringing an end to a highly successful 16-year association with the Chennai-based franchise.
The former India pacer arrives with considerable IPL experience, having featured in 100 matches during his playing career before moving into coaching roles following his retirement. Zaheer was also an important member of the Indian team that lifted the 2011 ODI World Cup.
His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for CSK after Fleming’s long spell in charge. During his time with the franchise, Fleming helped Chennai win five IPL championships and two Champions League titles.
Zaheer said joining one of the competition’s most successful franchises was a special opportunity, having previously experienced the atmosphere around CSK as an opposition player.
“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests,” said Zaheer.
The former pacer also highlighted the support CSK receives at its home ground in Chennai as he prepares to begin his new role.
“The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history.”
CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan welcomed Zaheer to the franchise and pointed to his experience both as an international bowler and as a mentor to younger players.
“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India’s success in the 2000s. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family,” Viswanathan said.
Zaheer will now take charge of a CSK side entering a new era following Fleming’s departure, with the former India international tasked with carrying forward the franchise’s successful legacy in the upcoming IPL season.
