Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra reckons Rohit Sharma is not going anywhere amid retirement speculations. It was recently reported that the Lord’s ODI against England will be the last game for the talismanic batter but BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia went on to dismiss the claims.

It was understood that selectors had informed the veteran batter about their decision that they want to back a young player ahead of the next ODI World Cup.

Meanwhile, Rohit has looked a bit rusty in the two ODIs against England. Rohit was dismissed after scoring 11 runs off 21 balls in the opening ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Tuesday after he advanced down the track against Sam Curran but holed out to Harry Brook at mid-off.

Furthermore, Rohit could only manage 26 runs off 47 balls in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on Thursday. After facing nine dot balls on the bounce, Rohit went for the sweep against Will Jacks but managed a bottom edge, which ballooned to Jos Buttler.

“I really hope that India wins, and I really hope that Rohit Sharma scores the runs this time around. Firstly, he is not going anywhere. The guy is not retiring. However, if the conversation goes in the direction where it’s finalized and you tell Rohit that you are no longer continuing with him, I hope it’s not, but if it were to be the last game, I want him to score a century,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.

The renowned commentator said the Lord’s game will be crucial for Rohit to get back amongst the runs.

“Whenever he says goodbye to this format, he should leave with a lasting impression. That’s my only small wish. It’s probably the beauty of cricket that, despite playing so much cricket, being an absolute legend of a cricketer, and having a phenomenal international career, you reach a stage where the relevance of the match increases. You making runs becomes necessary,” he observed.

Rohit has made it clear that he wants to be part of the ODI squad for the 2027 World Cup.
