Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has shed light on Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s potential Indian call-up after the youngster had a magnificent run in IPL 2026. Chopra said Suryavanshi is ready to play for India but questioned who he would replace at the top of the order, as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have done a fantastic job so far.
Suryavanshi ended the IPL 2026 season with 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a blistering strike rate of 237.30. Thus, he bagged the Orange Cap award along with the MVP of the season. He also won the Super Striker and Emerging Player of the season award.
Suryavanshi has impressed with his pyrotechnics, and many feel he should get his maiden call-up in the Indian team.
“I am also saying that he is ready, but no one has the answer to the question of how he should be selected. You have only two options. One is that you tell Sanju Samson you aren’t selecting him, that he has won two consecutive World Cups, scored runs in the virtual quarterfinal, the semi-final, and the final, and became the Player of the Tournament, but now you are being removed because we have got something new,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
The renowned commentator added that selectors won’t be able to justify Abhishek Sharma’s omission as well.
“Otherwise, you can say Abhishek Sharma had a middling sort of season, and although he might still be the No. 1-ranked T20I batter and scored runs in the World Cup final, now we are done, and we are going in a different direction. It’s not that simple. It’s not that easy because the justification won’t happen,” Chopra observed.
Suryavanshi scored five half-centuries and one hundred in IPL 2026 and consistently delivered for the inaugural champions.
