Former India batter Aakash Chopra has predicted a standout season for Sanju Samson in the upcoming IPL 2026, backing the Chennai Super Kings’ new recruit to finish as the tournament’s highest run-scorer and claim the Orange Cap.
Samson’s move to Chennai Super Kings came through one of the most talked-about trades in recent IPL history. Rajasthan Royals agreed to send their long-time captain to Chennai in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, a deal that surprised many fans ahead of the new season.
During a rapid-fire segment on Crex discussing predictions for IPL 2026, Chopra was asked who he believed would win the Orange Cap. The former cricketer immediately chose Samson, showing strong confidence in the right-handed batter’s ability to deliver in his new franchise.
Chopra also made several other bold predictions for the season. He tipped Jasprit Bumrah to claim the Purple Cap as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, while naming young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as his pick for the Emerging Player of the Season award.
When asked about the four teams likely to make the playoffs, Chopra initially hesitated before selecting Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. Interestingly, these four franchises have never qualified for the playoffs together in the same season.
He then went a step further by predicting Delhi Capitals to lift the IPL trophy in 2026. While acknowledging that the team playing the best cricket will ultimately win the title, Chopra’s choice raised eyebrows given that Delhi have never won the IPL before.
If his predictions come true, several historic milestones could follow. Samson has never previously finished a season as the IPL’s leading run-scorer, Bumrah has never topped the wicket charts, and Delhi Capitals would finally break their long-standing title drought.
Samson’s potential success at Chennai could also be influenced by his expected role in the batting order. He is likely to open the innings for CSK, while Ruturaj Gaikwad may slot in at number three. Known for his ability to score quickly once he settles in, Samson often builds momentum across multiple matches when in form.
The batter also enters IPL 2026 in exceptional touch following his impressive performance in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph. Samson was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 321 runs in five innings at an average of 80.25 and an explosive strike rate of 199.38.
His campaign included three consecutive half-centuries in must-win games, performances that significantly boosted his confidence.
With form, confidence and a fresh start at Chennai Super Kings, Samson will now aim to justify the blockbuster trade and play a key role in the franchise’s quest for another IPL title.
