LeBron James will begin the final chapter of his NBA career on one of basketball’s biggest stages, with his Philadelphia 76ers debut coming against defending champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on October 20.
The NBA revealed selected games from its 2026-27 schedule on Tuesday, ahead of the full schedule announcement on Thursday. James and the Sixers will feature prominently, including a Christmas Day trip to face his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Opening night will feature three games, all televised by NBC. Boston Celtics will visit Detroit for a 3 p.m. EDT start before Philadelphia faces New York. The Knicks will raise their championship banner before the game, celebrating their first NBA title since 1973.
The night will conclude with San Antonio Spurs hosting Oklahoma City in a rematch of the Western Conference finals.
James, the NBA’s career scoring leader, recently chose Philadelphia as the final destination of his career. His decision ended weeks of uncertainty that affected the league’s scheduling process. Commissioner Adam Silver had said teams and television networks were seeking clarity over when the schedule could be completed.
Philadelphia has also acquired All-Star Jaylen Brown from Boston and is expected to emerge as a major challenger to New York.
James’ first home appearance for the Sixers will come on October 22 against Cleveland, one of his former teams. The 41-year-old Ohio native had been linked with a possible third stint with Cleveland before choosing Philadelphia.
His return to Los Angeles will come on Christmas Day as part of ESPN’s five-game lineup. The holiday schedule begins with San Antonio visiting New York, followed by Miami at Boston, Philadelphia at Los Angeles, Oklahoma City at Minnesota and Denver at Golden State.
Victor Wembanyama will also be a major attraction on Christmas when San Antonio returns to Madison Square Garden for an NBA Finals rematch against the Knicks. Wembanyama previously produced 42 points and 18 rebounds there on Christmas in 2024.
The Spurs will later meet Houston at the University of Texas on October 23, a matchup featuring former Longhorns star Kevin Durant. That Prime Video doubleheader will begin with the Knicks visiting the Celtics.
Meanwhile, Minnesota travels to Miami on October 21, when most teams begin their seasons. Miami enters the campaign with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, while Minnesota has added point guard LaMelo Ball.
With James beginning his Philadelphia career and several stars changing teams, the NBA’s early schedule places its biggest names at the centre of opening week and Christmas Day.
