LeBron James has opened up about his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers, revealing how his longstanding relationship with Tyrese Maxey helped make Philadelphia an attractive destination.
James discussed his free agency decision during Friday’s episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast with Steve Nash. When Nash asked what ultimately led him toward Philadelphia, James began his answer by focusing on Maxey and the relationship they had developed long before becoming teammates.
James explained that his connection with Maxey extends well beyond basketball. He praised the 25-year-old’s personality and consistency, saying Maxey is the same person every day, something James considers uncommon both in professional sports and everyday life.
The two had already developed a close relationship before Philadelphia emerged as a realistic possibility for James. They share representation through Klutch Sports and have trained together on multiple occasions since Maxey entered the NBA in 2020.
Maxey also moved quickly once James became available.
James revealed that after he and his representatives informed the Los Angeles Lakers he would not return, Maxey was among the first people to call him. James added that while he does not answer the phone for everyone, Maxey is someone he is always willing to speak with.
Philadelphia was not initially a serious option for James. He said the 76ers were not really part of the conversation before their offseason trade for Jaylen Brown. That move added another established star to a roster already featuring Maxey, Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe, significantly changing how James viewed the possibility of joining the team.
Maxey was not the only factor.
James also pointed to the opportunity to help Embiid pursue the championship that has remained absent from his résumé. He noted that Embiid has accomplished virtually everything else during his career and said he hopes he can provide the final piece needed to help the former MVP get over that hurdle.
James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia in July. The agreement includes a player option for the second season.
When James originally announced his decision, he identified another championship opportunity as his primary motivation. His latest comments provide more detail about why Philadelphia became the destination for that pursuit, with his relationship with Maxey at the center of the decision and the additions around him strengthening the appeal.
