LeBron James’ Decision That Surprises the NBA

LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers star and considered by many one of the greatest basketball players in history, is already thinking about what his life will look like after retirement. However, that future does not include becoming a coach, at least not formally within the NBA. The only exception he envisions is guiding his sons as they pursue their own professional careers.

In an interview with CGTN Sports Scene, the four-time NBA champion made it clear that coaching is not part of his post-playing plans. He said that while he loves the game deeply, he does not see himself on the sidelines after retiring, ruling out following the path of other legends who transitioned into coaching.

LeBron Still Performs Like a Star at 40

Despite turning 40, James continues to play at an elite level. Last season, he appeared in 70 games, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds, earning a spot on the All-NBA Second Team. His production remains vital for the Lakers, keeping them competitive in the Western Conference.

Over the summer, James decided to exercise his player option to stay with Los Angeles for one more year. For the first time in his career, he will play under a contract that expires at the end of the season, creating uncertainty both within the organization and around the league. Still, he is preparing for his 23rd NBA season, a remarkable record that highlights his longevity and commitment.

Uncertainty About His Future in the League

James already led the Lakers to an NBA title in 2020, and even at 40, he remains determined to chase another championship, now alongside Luka Doncic. The duo is seen as one of the most intriguing pairings in the league, though questions remain about how long they will play together given the uncertainty surrounding LeBron’s future beyond 2026.

The timing of his retirement is still unknown. Reports indicate that the Lakers’ front office does not yet have a clear plan for the four-time Finals MVP’s future. As a result, every game LeBron plays is viewed as part of a historic legacy that has already secured him a place in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.

A Legacy That Transcends Generations

Beyond his accomplishments on the court, James has emphasized that his main priority in the next phase of his life will be his family. He intends to guide his sons off the court and instill in them the same discipline that made him one of the most successful players of all time.

Meanwhile, the NBA prepares for another season in which LeBron will once again challenge the limits of age. Whether this will be his final run or if he extends his career beyond 2026 remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: his influence on the game will continue to shape the league, just as it has since his debut in 2003.
