Top seed Tanvi Sharma made a winning start at the Vietnam Open 2026, defeating Canada’s Rachel Chan in straight games on Wednesday to move into the next round of the BWF World Tour Super 100 tournament.
Tanvi secured a 21-16, 21-17 victory over Chan in the Round of 32, continuing her impressive run of form on the international circuit.
In the men’s singles competition, experienced Indian shuttler H. S. Prannoy had to work much harder for his place in the next round. Prannoy recovered after losing the opening game against Malaysia’s Kok Jing Hong to register a 14-21, 25-23, 21-12 victory in a contest that lasted more than an hour.
The result adds another positive chapter to what has been an eventful period for Tanvi. Earlier this month, the Indian teenager competed at the China Masters 2026, where she pushed Japan’s World No. 9 Tomoka Miyazaki to three games in the Round of 16.
Tanvi eventually lost 17-21, 21-18, 16-21 after a closely fought 66-minute contest in Shenzhen. She had reached the last 16 after defeating Denmark’s Amalie Schulz 21-16, 21-17 in the opening round of the BWF World Tour Super 750 event.
Her performances have followed a major breakthrough last month, when she captured her maiden BWF World Tour title at the Taipei Open Super 300.
Tanvi defeated Vietnam’s sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-16, 21-16 in just 36 minutes in the women’s singles final. The triumph came after she had finished runner-up at the U.S. Open Super 300 last year.
Coached by P.V. Sindhu’s former mentor Park Tae-sang, Tanvi also became the first Indian women’s singles player since Saina Nehwal to win the Taipei Open. Nehwal had claimed the tournament’s women’s singles crown in 2008.
There were mixed results for the other Indians competing at the Vietnam Open on Wednesday.
Anmol Kharb suffered a straight-games defeat against Thailand’s Sarunrak Vitidsarn, losing 14-21, 14-21. Alap Mishra, meanwhile, progressed after beating fellow Indian Arya Bhivpathaki 21-8, 21-14.
With Tanvi advancing comfortably and Prannoy surviving a demanding three-game contest, both Indians remain in contention as the Super 100 tournament moves into its next stage.
