Satwik-Chirag Fall Short in China Masters Semifinal Against South Korea

Indian men’s doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out of the China Masters 2024 after a hard-fought semifinal loss to South Korea’s Jin Yong and Seo Seung Jae. The South Korean pair prevailed 18-21, 21-14, 16-21 in a thrilling contest in Shenzhen on Saturday.

The match marked Satwik-Chirag’s return to competitive action following their disappointing Paris Olympics campaign and Satwik’s subsequent shoulder injury. The duo, who are the reigning Asian Games gold medallists, were aiming to replicate their historic feat of reaching last year’s final at the China Masters but fell short despite a spirited display.

The Indian pair started strong in the opening game, controlling the pace and holding a lead for most of the set. However, the South Koreans staged a late surge, capitalizing on unforced errors by Satwik-Chirag to clinch the game 21-18.

In the second game, an early point conceded by the Indians led to Chirag briefly stepping aside to use cold spray, likely addressing a niggle. Despite this, the duo showed great resolve and consistency, steadily building momentum to dominate the set 21-14. Chirag’s sharp shots and Satwik’s powerful smashes highlighted their improved form as they forced a decider.

The third game saw Jin Yong and Seo Seung Jae establish an early 11-7 lead at the mid-game interval. A pulsating exchange of dynamic rallies, including a 54-shot duel, kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The Indians pushed hard, closing the gap at times, but the Koreans held their ground to seal the final game 21-16.

While the loss ended their China Masters run, Satwik-Chirag’s performance showed glimpses of their top form. This was their first tournament in months, and they will likely view it as a stepping stone as they regain fitness and rhythm.

The Indian pair will aim to build on this outing as they prepare for upcoming tournaments in the packed badminton calendar. With their reputation as one of the world’s top doubles teams, Satwik and Chirag remain strong contenders for future titles.

Despite falling short in Shenzhen, their dynamic style and fighting spirit continue to inspire fans and elevate Indian badminton on the global stage.
