India’s HS Prannoy bowed out of the Taipei Open after suffering a straight-games defeat to Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
Prannoy struggled to find momentum throughout the contest as Gunawan dictated play for long periods. Although the opening game began on even terms, the Hong Kong shuttler quickly took control after the scores were locked at 6-6. Gunawan produced a dominant run of points to overwhelm the Indian and sealed the first game 21-9.
The second game proved to be a much closer affair, with Prannoy responding strongly and matching his opponent point for point. The two players remained level until 19-19, raising hopes of the match being extended to a deciding game. However, Gunawan held his nerve in the closing stages, winning the final two points to complete a 21-9, 21-19 victory and secure his place in the quarterfinals.
The defeat marked the end of Prannoy’s campaign at the tournament, with the Indian unable to recover from a one-sided opening game despite a spirited effort in the second.
There was better news for India in the women’s singles competition, where three players progressed to the last eight. Devika Sihag, Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma all booked their places in the quarterfinals with victories on Thursday, ensuring continued Indian representation in the tournament.
While Prannoy’s exit was a setback for India in the men’s singles draw, the performances of Devika, Unnati and Tanvi kept the country’s hopes alive as the Taipei Open moved into the quarterfinal stage. Their progress provides India with multiple contenders in the women’s competition as they look to build on their strong runs in the tournament.
